Despite huge opposition to the expansion of the Pilsen TIF from community members, the expansion is very much alive! Read the story from 8/8/24 from Block CLub Chicago-> “A Plan To Expand a TIF District In Pilsen Is Dividing Neighbors” Contact us at tom at tresser dot com
There was a super-charged public meeting in Pilsen on 9/9/24. Alderman Sigcho-Lopez is pushing hard to dramatically increase the size of the Pilsen TIF despite the ongoing and strong opposition from the community. It seemed most people at the meeting did want the Pilsen TIF in the first place, let alone its extension to 2034, let alone its almost doubling in size. Here is my (brief) tesimony:
Read in-depth coverage of the TIF fight highlighting El Pueblo Manda and the TIF Illumination Project!
Listen to Tom Tresser’s remarks (2:21):
El Pueblo Manda and their allies staged a great event in Dvorak Park on May 6! Read coverage.
According to the Cook County Assessor, if we abolished ALL TIFS in Cook County, your property tax bill woukld go down by 15%! The chart above shows what would happen to the property tax paid by a 2 flat property in Pilsen on 18th Street. This property paid about $11,000 in taxes in 2021. If there had been NO TIFs, that bill would’ve been about $9,000!
El Pueblo Manda (The People Rule) is a grassroots organization started in the Pilsen and Little Village communities of Chicago in 2022. They are up in arms over their skyrocketing property tax bills and very much fear they are being pushed our of their communities. Contact them at elpueblomandachicago@gmail.com, 773-453-2009. They invited the TIF Illumination Project to do a “TIF 101” workshop focusing on the Pilsen TIF on April 27, 2023. They provided refreshments and a team of three amazing translators. Some 60 people attended.
Our three awesome translators (seen above, left) were: Solange Pina Weber, Brigida Franco, and Eunice Mina.
Here is the presentation:
We also discussed the city’s proposal to DOUBLE the size of the Pilsen TIF and people were loudly opposed.
